Bhagavad Gita Chapter 14 Verse 9 — Gunatraya Vibhaga Yoga

सत्त्वं सुखे सञ्जयति रजः कर्मणि भारत | ज्ञानमावृत्य तु तमः प्रमादे सञ्जयत्युत ||१४-९||
Transliteration
sattvaṃ sukhe sañjayati rajaḥ karmaṇi bhārata . jñānamāvṛtya tu tamaḥ pramāde sañjayatyuta ||14-9||
Hindi Meaning
।।14.9।। हे भारत ! सत्त्वगुण सुख में आसक्त कर देता है और रजोगुण कर्म में, किन्तु तमोगुण ज्ञान को आवृत्त करके जीव को प्रमाद से युक्त कर देता है।।
English Meaning
O son of Bharata, the mode of goodness conditions one to happiness; passion conditions one to fruitive action; and ignorance, covering one’s knowledge, binds one to madness.
Commentary
A person in the mode of goodness is satisfied by his work or intellectual pursuit, just as a philosopher, scientist or educator may be engaged in a particular field of knowledge and may be satisfied in that way. A man in the mode of passion may be engaged in fruitive activity; he owns as much as he can and spends for good causes. Sometimes he tries to open hospitals, give to charity institutions, etc. These are signs of one in the mode of passion. And the mode of ignorance covers knowledge. In the mode of ignorance, whatever one does is good neither for him nor for anyone.

Ek insaan jo goodness ke mode mein hota hai, wo apne kaam ya intellectual pursuits se khush rehta hai, jaise ek philosopher, scientist ya educator apne knowledge ke kisi particular field mein engaged hote hain aur usi se santusht hote hain. Dusri taraf, ek insaan jo passion ke mode mein hai, wo fruitive activities mein laga rehta hai; wo jitna ho sake utna kamaata hai aur achhe kaamon par kharch karta hai. Kabhi-kabhi wo hospitals kholne ki koshish karta hai, charity institutions ko donate karta hai, aur ye sab passion ke mode ki nishaniyan hain. Aur ignorance ke mode mein, jo bhi insaan karta hai, wo na toh uske liye accha hota hai aur na kisi aur ke liye.

प्रस्तुत श्लोक पूर्व के तीन श्लोकों का सारांश है। गीता गुरु शिष्य संवाद के रूप में होने से जगद्गुरु भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण सामान्य बुद्धि के अपने शिष्य अर्जुन के कल्याण के इच्छुक होने के कारण विवेचित विषय का ही संक्षेप में निर्दश करते हैं जिन्हें पहले हम विस्तारपूर्वक देख चुके हैं।ये गुण उपर्युक्त कार्य कब करते हैं इस पर कहते हैं
